Consider the following scenario. You use Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 to download a file. When the Save As... dialogue box prompts you to specify the save options, you delay the pressing of the Save or Save As... buttons for a few minutes. When the file is eventually saved, it will appear to be corrupt and unable to be opened.
When the Save As... dialogue is not acted on in a timely manner, the Web Server or Proxy Server where the file is being downloaded from considers the connection from Internet Explorer as an inactive session, and begins to time out the connected port. By the time the user clicks the Save or Save As buttons, the session timeout has already expired. This causes the connection to be closed (either by Internet Explorer or by the Web/Proxy server, depending on the configured timeout values) and causes Internet Explorer to close the session and save the partially downloaded file to disk.
To resolve this problem, choose one of the following options:
Upgrade to Internet Explorer 9. This problem does not occur with Internet Explorer 9, which also has a feature to pause and resume downloads.
Take action on the file download dialogue box before the timeout expires.
