Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You set up an enterprise certification authority (CA) in a Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory domain on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You configure a Version 3 certificate template that requires a Cryptography Next Generation (CNG) provider for the domain.

  • You configure auto-enrollment for computer certificates.

  • You enable the Force strong key protection for user keys stored on the computer policy for a Group Policy Object (GPO).

In this scenario, the auto-enrollment process for computer certificates fails on the client computer. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following in the event log:

NTE_SILENT_CONTEXT (0x80090022)

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error in CNG implementation.
