This article describes how to manually uninstall Internet Explorer version 5.5 from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98. This may be useful if the Uninstall Internet Explorer and all its components entry in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel is unavailable.
INPORTANT: You cannot use the procedure in this article to manually uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 from a computer that is running Windows Millennium Edition (Me) because Internet Explorer 5.5 cannot be removed from Windows Me.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To manually uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5, use the appropriate method.
Windows 95-Based Computer
Create a local copy of installation files on your computer. This is called a "flat" folder, and it will contain the source files and other important files you will need to use for this procedure. To create a flat folder for your installation files:
Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
Double-click drive C to open it, point to New on the File menu, and then click Folder. Type Flats, and then press ENTER.
Insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Copy the Win95 folder to the C:\Flats folder you just made. Note that you should have your Windows 95 product key available.
Copy the installation source files for the version of Internet Explorer that you want to revert back to. Copy these files to the C:\Flats folder. For example, if you want to revert to Internet Explorer version 5, you would copy the Internet Explorer version 5 installation files to the C:\Flats folder.
Verify that you have all of the installation disks or CD-ROMs for any of your hardware device drivers that are not included with Windows 95.
Obtain a copy of the the Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM) file (Msjavax86.exe) from the following Microsoft Web site, and place it into the C:\Flats folder:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are on the list of installed programs, uninstall these programs, and restart your computer if you are prompted to do so:
MSN Messenger Service
Microsoft Windows Media Player
Microsoft Outlook Express
After you uninstall these programs, or if none of these programs are on the list of installed programs, continue to the next step.
Use Registry Editor to delete the following registry keys, and then quit Registry Editor:
Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft Delete the "Active Setup" key
Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main Delete the "Window Title" value
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft Delete the "Active Setup" key
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer Delete the "Version" value
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main Delete the "Window Title" value
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion Delete the "Plus! version number" value
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Migration Delete the "100" value
Use a text editor (such as Notepad) to create a .bat file that is named Ieren9x.bat and that has the following lines in it:
IMPORTANT: Save this file to the root folder of drive C. The preceding entries for the Ieren9x.bat file are based on Windows being installed in the "Windows" folder on drive C. If Windows is not installed in the Windows folder on drive C, you must alter the preceding entries. For example, if Windows is installed in the "NewWindows" folder on drive D, entries that start with c:\windows would need to be changed to start with d:\newwindows.
Restart your computer, and then press F8 when you see the "Starting Windows 95" message. On the Start menu, choose Command prompt only. At the command prompt, type cd \, and then press ENTER. At the command prompt, type Ieren9x.bat, and then press ENTER.
Type ren c:\windows\explorer.exe explorer.old, and then press ENTER. Type ren c:\windows\system\shell32.dll shell32.old, and then press ENTER.
Start Windows 95 Setup from the c:\Flats\Win95 folder. To do so, type c:\flats\win95\setup, and then press ENTER. Install Windows 95 to the c:\Windows folder, and click No to all if you receive any version conflict error messages. Restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.
After you restart your computer, you may be prompted to keep the Regsvr32.exe file if you are trying to join a domain. If you receive this prompt, click No to continue, and then click OK to restart your computer.
Internet Explorer 5.5 has been manually uninstalled. Verify that you do not have any lost or damaged device drivers. To do so, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click System, and then view Device Manager. Reinstall any drivers that appear to be missing or damaged.
Install Internet Explorer from the source files you saved in step 1d.
If you have not previously named files to an .old file extension (as you did in steps 5 and 6), you can delete files with an .old file extension to free disk space. To do so, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. In the Named box, type *.old, click drive C in the Look in box, and then click OK. Select and then delete the files you find with an .old file extension.
If you choose to install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or 4.01 Service Pack 2 (SP2), after Setup finishes and you restart your computer, you may receive the following error message if a Microsoft VM was previously installed:
Java Package Manager: Unable to install Java Packages from C:\windows\dajava.cab and C:\windows\iejava.cab.
If your previous Internet Explorer installation did not include the Microsoft VM, you do not receive this error message. Also, this error message does not adversely affect your computer, so you can click OK when you receive it.
To check to see if you have the Microsoft VM installed, click Start, click Run, type command, press ENTER, type jview, and then press ENTER. If the command generates a valid response, the Microsoft VM is installed, and you can verify version information for the Microsoft VM.
To install Internet Explorer 5.01, run the Ie5setup.exe from the source files you saved in step 1d. To reinstall Internet Explorer 5.5, run the IE5Setup.exe file from the c:\Windows Update Setup Files folder (if it exists).
Windows 98-Based or Windows 98 Second Edition-Based Computer
Delete the Iemigrat.dll file from the c:\Windows\System folder.
