Outlook with the Redemption COM library installed crashes after you install security update 2644615

Support for Office 2003 has ended

Microsoft ended support for Office 2003 on April 8, 2014. This change has affected your software updates and security options. Learn what this means for you and how to stay protected.

Consider the following scenario. You are using Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. Additionally, you (or a custom add-in or program) install Outlook Redemption, a third-party COM library. After you install Microsoft security update 2644615 (MS12-001), Outlook may crash at startup or when you use some features.
In most cases, Outlook Redemption is installed by a third-party program or add-in. To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of the third-party program. The third-party vendor can provide more information on available updates. You may have to uninstall the third-party software until an update can be obtained.

If your organization developed a custom solution that uses Outlook Redemption, contact your administrator. It may be possible to update the custom solution to use a more recent version of Outlook Redemption.

The crash has not been reported with the latest version of Outlook Redemption. At the time of this writing, the most recent version of Outlook Redemption is 5.2.

Because other applications install Outlook Redemption, Microsoft cannot provide specific details on the removal or update of individual third-party applications.

The third-party products that this article discusses are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, about the performance or reliability of these products.
