Microsoft support policy for Hyper-V environments utilizing Network Attached Storage

SUMMARY
This article describes Microsoft support for using a file sharing protocol such as, Server Message Block (SMB), Common Internet File System (CIFS), or Network File System (NFS) with Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server “8” Beta.
An example configuration is to create an SMB share and then create a new VM on that share.

The support matrix for each protocol is displayed in the chart below:

Operating SystemSMBCIFSNFS
Windows Server 2008 (all editions)NoNoNo
Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008NoNoNo
Windows Server 2008 R2 (all editions)NoNoNo

MORE INFORMATION
On operating systems that do not support network attached storage, an operation such as exporting a VM will fail with an error similar to below:

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS
Date: <Date> <Time>
Event ID: 18100
Task Category: None
Level: Error
User: <User name>
Computer: <Computer name>
Description:
Failed to create export directory with the name '<SMB File Share>' with error 'General access denied error'(0x80070005): <Machine name>

In this scenario, during the export process from a remote machine, it impersonates the calling user for some portions of export, which means this happens under the context of the “Anonymous” account on the third machine in the case where constrained delegation is not enabled. This is required to ensure the calling user has the correct permissions to affect the destination storage location.
