Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) fixes in one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security updates that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) update release.
Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:

A user installs Microsoft SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for Microsoft Excel 2010 on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. The user is not a member of the Administrators group on the computer.

The user tries to start the PowerPivot for Excel add-in.
In this scenario, an error message that resembles the following is displayed intermittently:
Embedded Analysis Services Engine: Could not open embedded Powerpivot data.
Cause
This issue occurs because the embedded PowerPivot engine incorrectly checks for the SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege permission. By default, a regular user does not have SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege permission. Therefore, an error is generated.
Note The SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege permission lets a user raise the scheduling priority of a process and increase the working set of the process. This speeds up execution of the process.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, apply the cumulative update on a computer that has SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for Excel 2010 installed.

Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
Workaround
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.
Method 1
Grant the user the SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege permission.
Method 2
Add the user to the Administrators group on the computer that encounter the issue which is described in the "Symptoms" section.
