Symptoms

Assume that you install the update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 2584476 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additionally, assume that the computer is a multihomed DNS server. In this situation, the number of DNS entries fluctuates for several minutes when you first start the computer. Additionally, the Remote Procedure Call service fails intermittently, and you receive the following error message:

Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable.

Notes

  • This issue also occurs after you install one of the updates that are described in KB 975792 and in KB 2509553.

  • This issue does not occur when one of the following conditions is true:

    • You select the Disable recursion option in the Advanced table of the DNS properties.

    • You restart DNS and DNS Cache at the same time.
