"Unsupported configuration" warning when you run a Windows 8-based or Windows Server 2012-based virtual machine in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Hyper-V role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You run a Windows 8-based or Windows Server 2012-based virtual machine on the computer.
In this scenario, the following Warning event is logged in the Hyper-V-Worker or Hyper-V-Integration log:

Device '<Device Name>' in '<VM Name>' is loaded but has a different version from the server. Server version <Server version number> Client version <VM version number> (Virtual machine ID <VM GUID> ). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

For example, the following Warning event is logged in the Hyper-V-Worker log:

Description:
Device 'Microsoft Synthetic Display Controller' in 'Server2012' is loaded but has a different version from the server. Server version 3.0 Client version 3.2 (Virtual machine ID E3B9AE19-888A-422D-AAD9-3A6E7239F9A0). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

Resolution
This is a known issue that occurs when a virtual machine that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 is hosted in Windows Server 2008 R2. You can safely ignore the warning message.
