When you hold down CONTROL and drag a cell that contains text or a value to a new location, a shortcut menu appears. If you click Create Hyperlink Here on the shortcut menu, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Excel cannot paste the data.
The cell is not copied to the new location and no hyperlink is created.
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
Select the cell to copy.
Hold down OPTION and drag the cell to the new location.
Excel creates a copy of the cell in that location.
Hold down CONTROL, click the new cell, and then click Hyperlink on the shortcut menu.
In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click the Document tab.
Under Anchor, click Locate.
In the Type in the cell reference box, type the cell reference to the cell that you used in step 1. Click OK.
Excel creates a copy of the original cell that contains a hyperlink to the original cell location.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
If you copy a cell and click the Edit menu, the Paste as Hyperlink menu command is unavailable (appears dimmed). However, if you copy a cell and switch to another Microsoft Office 2001 program, the Paste as Hyperlink command is available on the Edit menu, and you can paste the copied text or value and a hyperlink to the source cell.
In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, the Paste as Hyperlink menu command is unavailable (appears dimmed) if you have not saved the workbook at least once. In Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac, the menu item also appears dimmed, but you cannot save the workbook to resolve the problem.
