SYMPTOMS
When you try to author remotely or publish remotely to a FrontPage extended Web site, you are continually prompted for your user name and password.
WORKAROUND
Use the following methods to troubleshoot this problem.

NOTE: These steps do not work on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 2000.

If You Connect to the Internet via a Modem

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
  3. Right-click the shortcut to your Internet connection, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  4. In Windows 95/98, click the Server Types tab, and then click to select the Log on to Network check box. In Windows Me, click the Security tab and then click to select the Log on to Network check box.
  5. Click OK.

Verify That the Client for Microsoft Networks Is Installed

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Network icon.
  3. Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks is listed on the Configuration tab.
If it is not listed, follow these steps.

NOTE: You may need your Microsoft Windows CD-ROM for these steps.
    1. Click Add, select Client, and then click Add.
    2. In the list of manufacturers, click Microsoft.
    3. In the Network Clients window, click Client for Microsoft Networks.
    4. Click OK, and then wait for the Configuration window to reappear. Click OK again.
    5. Restart your computer if prompted to do so.

Turn On Password Prompting in Microsoft Internet Explorer

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Internet icon.
  3. On the Security tab in the Internet Settings dialog box, select Internet Zone.
  4. Click Custom Level.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the list to find User Authentication.
  6. Change this setting to Prompt for user name and password.
  7. Click OK twice.
After you follow these steps, try to publish or author remotely again. If you still are prompted repeatedly for your password, contact your Web presence provider.
