How to Troubleshoot Automatic Updates in Windows Millennium Edition

This article describes how to troubleshoot issues with the Automatic Updates feature in Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
To troubleshoot issues with the Automatic Updates feature:
  1. Determine how long you have been online since Windows Me Setup completed. If you have been running Windows Me for more than 24 hours, try connecting to the Internet and allow your computer to idle for approximately 15 minutes to allow Automatic Update time to check for updates.
  2. Check the settings of Automatic Update in Control Panel to see which option is selected. If you made a change after the download started, the download must complete before the change that you made will take effect.
  3. By clicking the Austate.cfg file, which is located in the Drive Letter:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate folder, you can check the time stamp on the file. The time stamp indicates the last time that Automatic Update ran, which, if you have been connected to the Internet for at least 15 minutes in the past 24 hours, should not be more than 24 hours old. If it is not there, it is possible that Automatic Update cannot detect your connection to the Internet.
  4. Verify whether there is anything in the Drive Letter:\Program Files\Windowsupdate\Cabs folder. A .cab file indicates that the update has been completely downloaded; a hidden file (with an .aut extension) indicates that a download is in progress.
  5. Check for the presence of a Wuhistv3.log file in the Drive Letter:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate folder. If one exists, look at the contents by opening the file in a text editor (such as Notepad) to check the activity of the Automatic Update feature. Perhaps the download has already started and you are not aware of it. Note that there may be entries in this log file from the Windows Update Web site.
  6. As a last resort, rename the Drive Letter:\Program Files\Windowsupdate folder to reset the full Automatic Update process:
    1. Right-click the Program Files\Windowsupdate folder.
    2. Click Rename.
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Connect to the Internet.
    5. Let the computer idle for about 15 minutes.
