FIX: A PowerPivot workbook cannot connect to data source and load data when a PowerPivot server of a SharePoint farm is unavailable

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 fix release.

Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 PowerPivot for Microsoft SharePoint in a two-server SharePoint farm.
  • You upload a Microsoft Excel workbook that contains PowerPivot table to a PowerPivot gallery.
  • You stop SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008 R2) and PowerPivot System Service on a server that is hosting the workbook.
  • You try to refresh data on the workbook in the PowerPivot gallery.
In this scenario, the workbook does not start to load the data from the other server. Additionally, the workbook cannot connect to the data source.
