You receive a user's request to enable or disable a personal archive mailbox in Microsoft Office 365 dedicated.
This issue occurs because enabling or disabling archive mailboxes is managed through the user's extension attribute.
Personal archive mailboxes are available as an additional feature of the Office 365 dedicated or International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) service that started in March 2012. The Personal Archive feature is available to Microsoft Exchange Plan 2 (EP2) mailboxes only. However, some additional prerequisites must be met before the feature is available. You should submit a configuration request (CR) for mailboxes to be provisioned with archived mailboxes. When the feature is enabled, archive mailboxes are managed by updating the reserved extension attribute.
How to enable a personal archive mailboxNote If a primary mailbox is put on litigation hold, a personal archive mailbox is put in the same state.
In the source environment, add the appropriate value to the user's extension attribute. An archive mailbox will be created and made available through Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access (OWA) and Microsoft Outlook automatically within 24 hours.
An archive mailbox will be created that has the same mailbox quota, the same managed folder policy, and the same retention policy as the primary mailbox that is assigned. The name of the archive mailbox will resemble the following:
Personal Archive - mailbox user's display nameThe archive mailbox appears automatically in Microsoft Outlook 2010 and OWA. Access through Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 is also available by installing an additional hotfix. How to disable a personal archive mailboxNote If the litigation hold feature is enabled in a mailbox, and if a personal archive mailbox must be disabled, you must temporarily disable the litigation hold feature.
In the source environment, remove the appropriate value from the user's extension attribute. Or, set the value of the extension attribute to another number. The archive mailbox will be disconnected from the managed mailbox within 24 hours.
The archive mailbox will be available in a disconnected state until the deleted mailbox retention period expires. The retention period is usually 30 days. If the mailbox is disconnected incorrectly, and if the archive mailbox is still available, you can reconnect the mailbox by using the regular enable process. If the archive mailbox is no longer available, a new archive mailbox will be provisioned.
If the mailbox is disconnected incorrectly, contact Microsoft to reconnect the archive mailbox to the primary mailbox.
To confirm that the archive mailbox is disabled, run the following cmdlet in Windows Remote PowerShell:
If the archive is disabled correctly, the properties resemble the following:
Get-Mailbox <user> | fl *archive*
