Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use Windows Explorer on a client computer that is running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to connect to a Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) server.

  • The DAV server is configured to Require client certificates or Accept client certificates from client computers that revert to other authentication methods. For example, the DAV server is configured for revert to Basic Authentication.

  • You map a drive by using a user account that is not the default logon user account on the client computer. To do this, you use one of the following methods:

    • You select the Connect using different credentials option when you use the Map Network Drive UI.

    • You run the net use command together with the /User parameter.

  • You have installed update 2727994 on the client computer, and one of the following conditions is true:

    • There is more than one certificate that the user can select.

    • There are no certificates in the certificate store on the client computer.

In this scenario, Windows Explorer does not prompt you to select a certificate, or prompt for Basic Authentication username password credentials. Therefore, the connection cannot be established. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another.

The dates and the times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The dates and the times for these files on your local computer are displayed in your local time together with your current daylight saving time (DST) bias. Windows 7 file information notes Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

    Version

    Product

    Milestone

    Service branch

    6.1.760
    1.22xxx

Workaround

To work around the issue, set the DAV server to "Ignore Certificate." This means that no certificate is required, and the server does not ask for one.

Note The default setting on an SAP DAV server is "Accept Certificate." Therefore, the server asks the client to transfer a certificate. When the client does not send a certificate, authentication is performed by using another method, such as Basic Authentication. In this situation, the DAV client should use Basic Authentication, even if you configure the DAV server Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) setting for client certificates to "Accept Certificate."

Status

The third-party products that this article discusses are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, about the performance or reliability of these products.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

Basic Authentication is a widely used, industry-standard method for collecting user name and password information. The advantage of Basic Authentication is that it is part of the HTTP specification, and is supported by most browsers. However, Basic Authentication prompts the user for a username and password. This information is then sent without encryption over the network.
