Summary
This diagnostic package configures Special Pool setting - used to troubleshoot machine crashes in case of pool corruption. Special Pool setting could affect machine performance and should only be used as a troubleshooting mechanism.
More information
The Configure Special Pool Settings Diagnostic is used to automate configuring Special Pool on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 Operating Systems.

On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, Special Pool setting configures the following two values under:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
  • PoolTag - setting the value to 0x2a
  • PagedPoolSize - setting this value to 0x10000000
Note: PagedPoolSize is only modified on 32-bit Windows Server 2003 Operating Systems


On operating systems newer than Windows Server 2003, Special Pool setting runs verifier tool to enable pool tagging. In this case, the following registry values under 'HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management' are modified:
  • VerifyDrivers - setting the value to *
  • VerifyDriverLevel- setting this value to 0x1
After running the package, you will be prompted to enable Special Pool. If you accept, the settings above will be modified. The diagnostic package will prompt you to reboot. After rebooting Special Pool will be enabled.

You can run the diagnostic package for a second time to disable Special Pool and return the original configuration.
