When attempting to complete an edit in the System Center 2012 Service Manager console, the following message may be logged:
"Failed to execute Submit operation. Fix the reported error before submitting again. This item cannot be updated because it has been changed by another user or process. To update the item, please close the item and open it again"
This issue can be caused by two or more users having the same Work Item open and attempting writes, or if a user has the Work Item open while a workflow is updating the same Work Item in the background. The impact is the same; the second writer will not be able to successfully submit changes until the item is reloaded to pick up the recent changes. The act of reloading will lose changes during the process so the user needs to preserve the changes, if appropriate, before reloading when the following message is displayed:
This item cannot be updated because it has been changed by another user or process. To update the item, please close the item and open it again.
This is a known issue in System Center 2012 Service Manager. After closing the error box, users should make a note of what was changed using cut and paste, a screen shot, etc.. When the user reloads and loses the changes (to pick up the conflicting changes) these can then be reapplied.
