MSB4019 error when you use the Visual Studio 2012 command prompts in Visual Studio 2013 Preview

Symptoms
You install Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Preview together with one of the following setup options:
  • Microsoft Windows 8 Development
  • Windows Phone 8.0 SDK

When you select one of these setup options, the Visual C++ v110 toolset is installed. This toolset includes the Visual C++ compiler and libraries. As part of the Visual C++ v110 toolset, the Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 command prompts are also installed and visible on the Start screen.

When you use the Visual Studio 2012 command prompt, you receive the following error message:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft.Cpp\v4.0\V110\Microsoft.CppCommon.targets(1810,3): error MSB4019: The imported project "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\WindowsXaml\v11.0\Microsoft.Windows.UI.Xaml.Cpp.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the <Import> declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk.

Cause
This problem occurs because these command prompts cannot correctly build Windows 8 Store apps unless you also have a Visual Studio 2012 product installed.
Workaround
To work around this problem, use the Visual Studio 2013 Preview command prompts to build Windows 8 Store apps in a Visual Studio 2013 Preview environment that uses the v110 toolset. The Visual Studio 2012 command prompts are only supported when they are installed as part of Visual Studio 2012.
Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
