In Microsoft Word, when you click New Blank Document on the standard toolbar (or press CTRL+N), the new document may not be opened into a maximized window. Instead, the New Document task pane may also occupy the window with the blank document.
This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
  • The Windows in Taskbar check box is not selected on the View tab in the Options dialog box on the Tools menu.

  • The Mail Merge task pane is visible.

  • The document window is maximized.
To work around this issue, close the task pane after the new document opens. To close the task pane, click Close (X) on the right side of the task pane title bar.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
