Assume that an email message is sent from an empty sender address to an environment that has Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed. At least one transport rule is configured in the organization. In this situation, the email message is not delivered successfully, and the EdgeTransport.exe process crashes on the Hub Transport server. Additionally, the following events are logged in the Application log:
Log Name: Application Source: MSExchange Common Event ID: 4999 Task Category: General Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Computer Name Description: Watson report about to be sent for process id: ProcessID, with parameters: E12, BuildType, ApplicationVersion, edgetransport, M.E.MessagingPolicies.Rules, M.E.M.R.TransportRulesEvaluator.EnterRule, System.NullReferenceException, Call Stack Hash, Assembly Version. ErrorReportingEnabled: False
Log Name: Application Source: MSExchangeTransport Date: Date Event ID: 10003 Task Category: PoisonMessage Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Computer Name Description: The transport process failed during message processing with the following call stack: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
This issue occurs because an object reference is not set to an instance of an object when the email message is processed by the transport rule. Therefore, an exception is thrown.
To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:
