Outlook error 0x80041059 "Could not authenticate against the Windows Live ID service"

You use the Microsoft Office Outlook Hotmail Connector with Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or Microsoft Outlook 2010 to synchronize two or more Hotmail, MSN, Live or email accounts. During the initial synchronization the Send/Receive status bar in Outlook reports a Send/Receive error. When you click the status bar to show progress, you receive the following error message:

Task '<Account Name> reported error (
0x80041059) : 'Could not authenticate against the Windows Live ID service. Please try again later'
Use one of the following workarounds:
  • After Outlook starts, manually start a new Send/Receive task by clicking the Send/Receive All Folders button.
  • Use only one account that uses the Hotmail Connector.
  • If you can do this, avoid restarting Outlook.
  • Upgrade to Outlook 2013. Outlook 2013 uses Exchange ActiveSync to connect to these kinds of accounts.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
