How to configure Sent Items in delegator and shared mailboxes in Office 365 Dedicated/ITAR

Symptoms
In Microsoft Office 365 Dedicated/ITAR, you want to change the Sent Items configuration in one of the following ways:
  • Have items that are sent on the behalf of a delegator stored in the Sent Items folder of both the delegate and the delegator.
  • Have items that are sent from a shared mailbox stored in the Sent Items folder of both the individual and shared mailboxes.
Cause
This behavior is not set by default.
Resolution
Exchange 2010:

2632409 Messages sent by using the "Send As" and "Send on behalf" permissions are only copied to the Sent Items folder of the sender in an Exchange Server 2010 environment

Exchange 2013:

You can enable this functionality by setting the feature enable flag to TRUE, as follows:
  • For emails that are sent from the shared mailbox:
    set-mailbox <mailbox name> -MessageCopyForSentAsEnabled $True
  • For emails that are sent on behalf of the shared mailbox:
    set-mailbox <mailbox name> -MessageCopyForSendOnBehalfEnabled $True
If you then want to disable the feature, do so as follows:
  • For emails that are sent from the shared mailbox:
    set-mailbox <mailbox name> -MessageCopyForSentAsEnabled $False
  • For emails that are sent on behalf of the shared mailbox:
    set-mailbox <mailbox name> -MessageCopyForSendOnBehalfEnabled $False
Note If you were using the client registry key to duplicate messages that were sent from a shared mailbox to a Sent Items folder of the sender, you should delete client registry keys if you enable this feature on the server side. If you do not delete client registry keys, you might see duplicate messages in the Sent Items folder (one created by client registry keys and one by the server).
