Symptoms

Assume that on a Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012-based computer, a disk is removed from the computer unexpectedly. In this situation, when you try to back up this computer by using Data Protection Manager (DPM), the backup operation fails together with a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) software provider error message that resembles the following, which indicates that access was denied:

ComputerName : <computername>
SourceName : VSS
EventCode         : 12289
TimeGenerated     : <DateTime>
Message           : Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{97823f6b-e259-11e2-93fe-6cf049017635} - 00000000000003FC,0x0053c06c,000000BCC1213070,0,000000BCC1214080,4096,[0]).  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.

Additionally, VSS tracing information is generated that resembles the following:

6216 [13:57:37.769 P:04AC T:1460 INCICHLH(0521)    SWPRV] THROW[CVssDiffArea::SetExplicit] Unexpected error calling a provider routine: DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{3c8064f7-be4e-11e2-93fe-00155d25661e} - 00000000000003C4,0x0053c06c,0000006732E109E0,0,0000006732E119F0,4096,[0])  [hr = 0x80070005]

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

    Version

    Product

    Milestone

    Service branch

    6.2.920 0.20 xxx

    Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012

    RTM

    LDR

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 8" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
