When you open a new document or a normal document in Microsoft Word 2002, the Mail Merge toolbar may be unexpectedly displayed, although the tools are unavailable (dimmed). Or, when you open a Mail Merge main document, the Mail Merge toolbar may not be automatically displayed.
This behavior is different than in Microsoft Word 2000.
This behavior occurs because Word 2002 remembers all of the toolbars that were open or closed when you last used Word, and starts a new document, or any document that you open, with the same toolbars displayed that were displayed when you last used Word. Any tools that are not useable are displayed as unavailable (dimmed).
In Word 2000, the Mail Merge toolbar is displayed automatically when you create a mail merge document, but is not displayed when a normal document is open. Note also that in Word 2000, you cannot select the Mail Merge toolbar on the Toolbars submenu of the View menu unless a mail merge document is open.
To work around this issue, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click to clear or select the Mail Merge check box, as needed.
