Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use third-party credential authentication to log on to a Windows RT, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012-based computer.

  • After the third-party authentication succeeds, the computer displays the Windows logon window.

  • You cancel the Windows logon window by clicking the back arrow.

In this scenario, the third-party authentication dialog cannot be displayed again.

Cause

This issue occurs because the ICredentialProviderCredentialEvents::OnCreatingWindow method returns an E_FAIL (0x80004005) error, and the parent handle value is NULL.

Resolution
