A standard installation of Windows 2000 Server installs Microsoft Internet Information Server and the FrontPage Server Extensions, by default. Therefore, if you are running this configuration, this article is useful only if you have additional virtual servers.
It is recommended that you download the extensions from this location, so that you are certain of obtaining the most recent release. If, for some reason, you cannot access the download, the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions can also be obtained from the following sources:
Microsoft Office 2000 Premium

Microsoft Windows 2000
As part of the Office Server Extensions in Microsoft Office 2000 Standard, Professional, and Premium editions
To download, look in the Platform and Operating System column to determine which version you want, and then click the link in the Download File column.
When you are prompted with the choices Run from Current Location or Save to Disk, select Save to Disk.
How to Install the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
After the Server Extensions file is downloaded, open the folder where it was saved.
Click the Setup icon.
To install to the default directory, click Install Now. To select a custom directory, click Customize and then select the directory. The FrontPage Server Extensions are now installed on your computer.
If you are installing or upgrading to a computer with a single Web server, the FrontPage Server Extensions will be installed automatically in the content area of the Web server. If the server is Internet Information Services, the initial administrator's account will be your system administrator account. For any other server, you will be prompted for an administrator account name and password.
If you are installing or upgrading to a computer with multiple Web servers or multiple virtual servers, you are prompted to install the server extensions by using one of the FrontPage Server Extensions administration tools. Select the FrontPage MMC snap-in, and then follow these steps:
After the MMC snap-in is open, click Console and then click Add/Remove Snap-in. If the console menu displays only the Options item, select Options and then select Author Mode in the Console Mode box.
In the list of Available Standalone Snap-ins, select Internet Services Manager (for later administration, you can also add the FrontPage Server Extensions snap-in at this time).
Click Add and then click Close to close the Add Standalone Snap-Ins dialog box.
In the Add/Remove Snap-ins box, you see a shortcut to Internet Information Server. Click OK.
Right-click the node for the Web site to which you want to install the FrontPage Server Extensions.
From the shortcut menu, select All Tasks and then select Configure Server Extensions. This opens the Server Extensions Configuration Wizard.
Click Next to create local Windows groups that can be used to identify which users are FrontPage administrators, authors, and browsers for the selected Web site. These three groups can be described as follows:
Administrators can create new FrontPage Webs, change settings on the Web site, control the site-authoring process, author new content, and browse existing content in the site.
Authors can author new content and browse existing content in the site.
Browsers can browse only existing content in the site.
Select the Create Local Machine Groups check box, and then click Next.
NOTE: You may want to go into Windows and add specific users to these groups.
Specify which group should be administrators. It is recommended that you leave the default choice Administrators in this box. Click Next.
If you have an SMTP server, you can now specify settings. If your server will not be sending e-mail, or if you do not yet know what the settings will be, select No, I'll do it later. Click Next.
Click Finish to complete the Server Extensions Configuration Wizard.
