When you install Microsoft Windows 2000-based printer drivers in Windows XP, you may receive the following error message:
The current printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 kernel mode drivers.
This issue occurs if the Windows 2000-based versions of the printer drivers are incompatible with Windows XP.

This issue may also occur if a Windows policy disallows installation of printers by using kernel-mode drivers.
To resolve this problem, contact the printer manufacturer to ask about the availability of an updated driver for your printer that is compatible with Windows XP.
Warning This workaround may make a computer or a network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.

To work around this issue, disable the Windows policy that disallows installation of printers by using kernel-mode drivers. If the computer is a member of a domain, contact the system administrator.

Note Installation of kernel-mode printer drivers can cause system instability. We recommend that you contact the manufacturer of the hardware to obtain the correct driver.
