MSN Explorer: E-mail and Communication

Did you know you can use MSN Explorer for more than just your MSN e-mail? What do you do if you receive a message with a blocked attachment? What about junk mail? Not quite sure what we're talking about? Relax. All this and more is covered below.

Import messages from other e-mail accounts

  1. Click the Help & Settings menu and then click Settings.

  2. In the left pane, click E-mail.
  3. Click Import or export e-mail, copy e-mail, or import contacts.
  4. Click Import e-mail and contacts and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Received an e-mail message with a blocked attachment

If you receive a message with a paper clip icon but no attachment, the file may have been blocked by the server to protect the safety of your computer. There are a few things you can do to receive the attachment:

  1. Ask the sender to scan the file for viruses and send you a clean copy. If a file contains a virus MSN can't clean, MSN blocks the file.
  2. Check with the sender to find out if the file was in a format that's easily infected by viruses. MSN blocks these types file formats automatically.

*Note: In both of the above cases, an alert will display when you open a message with a blocked attachment.

Train the junk e-mail filter

Although the junk (sometimes referred to as 'spam') e-mail filter catches most junk e-mail that gets delivered, it may miss some junk e-mail, or send some e-mail that isn't junk to the Junk E-Mail folder. You can train the junk e-mail filter to be more effective by telling it what is and isn't junk e-mail. The more you train the junk e-mail filter, the better it will get at filtering the right e-mail messages.

Unsafe content has been blocked:
If you receive this message, MSN has automatically blocked content that might harm your computer, such as frames, scripts and other content such as controls or embedded objects. When content has been blocked, text or images may be missing from an e-mail message, or the message may not be formatted as expected.

Identify e-mail messages as junk:
  1. In your Inbox, select the check box for the e-mail message that you want to mark as junk e-mail.
  2. Click Junk. The message is immediately moved to the Junk E-mail folder.

Identify e-mail messages as not junk:
  1. In the Junk E-mail folder, select the check box for the e-mail message you want to mark as not junk.
  2. Click Not Junk. The message is immediately moved to your Inbox.

Some important items to remember are below:
  • Messages more than seven days old are automatically deleted from the Junk E-mail folder.
  • The more you move messages from your Junk E-mail folder to your Inbox, the better your junk e-mail filter becomes at recognizing junk e-mail and sending it to the correct folder.
  • If you access your MSN mail through Microsoft Hotmail, you can delete junk e-mail immediately rather than after seven days. When you see this feature in Hotmail, junk e-mail is also automatically deleted in MSN Mail. To change this setting, sign into the Hotmail website and open the Options page.

Add a new POP3 e-mail account
