Outlook crashes and Skype for Business doesn't start

Symptoms
Assume that you install both Microsoft Office 2013 and Skype for Business. When you try to start Outlook 2013, it crashes. Additionally, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:

Microsoft Outlook has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem.

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened.

We're sorry, but Outlook has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Outlook will need to close as a result. Would you like us to repair now?

And when you try to start Skype for Business, you receive the following error message:

The file C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\<user@domain.com> - <profile name>.ost is in use and cannot be accessed. Close any application that is using this file, and then try again. You might need to restart your computer.

Cause
This issue occurs when the version of Office 2013 that's installed is MSI-based and the version of Skype for Business that's installed is Click-to-Run. We do not support the coexistence of an Office 2013 MSI-based installation and a Skype for Business Click-to-Run installation on the same computer.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, decide which installation method you want for both Office 2013 and Skype for Business. Then, remove the other installation by using the Programs and Features item in Control Panel. After you do this, you can install the product using the installation method that you decided upon.

For example, if you want to continue using your MSI installation of Office 2013, you must uninstall your Click-to-Run installation of Skype for Business and then install the MSI version of Skype for Business.

Note Some Office 2013 installations already include Skype for Business. In this situation, there's no need for a separate installation of Skype for Business.
