XADM: Exchange 2000 SP1 Installation Does Not Work If Exchange 2000 Is Installed on a Root Drive

SYMPTOMS
When you apply Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1), Update.exe may not work if Exchange is installed to a root drive, such as drive D. You may receive the following error message:
The root directory "%/s" may not be used as the installation directory. Please specify a folder in which to install Exchange.
The Exchange 2000 Server Setup Progress.log file may contain entries that are similar to thefollowing:

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in theMicrosoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, remove Exchange 2000, and then install it again in a subfolder; it is recommended that you keep the default folder name.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.
