On a networked computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP, after you turn on computer authentication, user authentication is not performed.
This problem may affect you if you try to configure Windows in a kiosk environment. You can turn on computer authentication to make sure that Group Policy settings are applied. However, if user authentication is not performed, you may not be able to manage network access from the computer based on user policy settings.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. After you apply the service pack or the hotfix that is described in the "Resolution" section, you can modify the AuthMode registry entry to set the kind of authentication that occurs when a user logs on. Use one of the following values in the AuthMode registry entry:
Kind of authentication
Use the default Windows XP authentication
Always perform user authentication when a user logs on
Perform computer authentication only
