Setting the Mobile Device Management Authority in Microsoft Intune

Summary
The mobile device management authority determines where you will perform mobile device management tasks. You can set the mobile device management authority to Microsoft Intune by using the Intune administrator console, or to System Center Configuration Manager by using the Configuration Manager console.

IMPORTANT Consider carefully whether you want to manage mobile devices by using Microsoft Intune only or by using Microsoft System Center 2012 Configuration Manager with Microsoft Intune integration. After you set the Mobile Device Management authority to either of these options, you will need to contact Microsoft product support to have it changed.

Mobile Device Management with Configuration Manager

When you use Configuration Manager to manage mobile devices, leave the mobile device management authority in the Microsoft Intune admin console as "Not Set". To set the mobile device management authority to System Center Configuration Manager, you must use your organizational account to create a Microsoft Intune subscription from within the Configuration Manager console, then select the option to allow Configuration Manager to manage the subscription.

Mobile Device Management with Exchange ActiveSync

For mobile devices that users have not enrolled, you can enable Exchange ActiveSync management by using the Exchange connector. Exchange devices can be managed in both on-premises servers and for hosted Exchange on Microsoft Office 365 in the cloud. The Exchange connector connects you with your Exchange deployment and lets you manage mobile devices through the Intune console.

Note If you plan to use Exchange ActiveSync to manage mobile devices, we recommend that you only deploy the Exchange Connector in the environment where you set the mobile device management authority.
