This article describes how to determine the version and build number of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).
To determine the version and build number of WMI, click the Version tab for the properties for %Windir%\System32\Wbem\Winmgmt.exe.

If you start with WMI version 1.5 (build 1085), you can also obtain the build version of WMI by using the following Visual Basic script:
set WMI = GetObject("WinMgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!/root/cimv2")set obj = WMI.Get("Win32_WMISetting=@")WScript.Echo obj.BuildVersion
NOTE: The BuildVersion of WMI version 1.5, which is an integrated component of Windows 2000, is 1085.0005. On computers that are running either Windows XP or Windows .NET, the build version for WMI is the same as the build version for the operating system. On Windows XP-based computers, the BuildVersion is 2600.0000. Also, the version of WMI reflects the version of the operating system. For example, the version of WMI that is included with Windows XP is 5.1.2600.0.

WMI version 1.0x was first released with both Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3). Distributions were also available for Microsoft Windows 95-based computers.

WMI version 1.1x, commonly referred to as build 698, was released with Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition. Distributions were also available for both Windows 95 and Windows NT4 Service Pack 4-based (SP4-based). WMI version 1.1 is also distributed with Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0. The WMI distribution that is included with SMS is also referred to as Wbemsdk.

WMI version 1.2x was included with Microsoft Windows 2000 Beta 3. This version was also distributed with Windows NT 4.0 for both SP4 and Service Pack 5 (SP5).

WMI version 1.5x, commonly referred to as build 1085, was released as an integrated component of Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me). Distributions are also available for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT-based computers.
