Number of deletions exceeds the configured deletion threshold in Azure AD in Office 365 dedicated/ITAR (vNext)

Symptoms
In Microsoft Azure Active Directory Connect (AAD Connect) or Azure Active Directory Sync (AAD Sync) in Microsoft Office 365 dedicated/ITAR, you receive an email notification that the number of object deletions has exceeded the configured deletion threshold in Azure AD.
Cause
This issue occurs if your pending deletions have outnumbered the configured deletion threshold in AAD Connect or AAD Sync.
Resolution
After you verify that a larger number of deletions is pending and that they're intentional, you may either increase the Prevent Accidental Deletions threshold or temporarily disable this feature until the number of deletions falls within the approved range.

In AAD Connect

The default deletion threshold is 500 objects. This threshold is established to protect against many accidental deletions.

To temporarily disable the threshold feature, follow these steps:

  1. Note your current deletion threshold setting.
  2. Open Windows PowerShell on the AAD Connect server.
  3. Run the following command:

    Import-Module ADSync
  4. To disable the feature, run the following command:

    Disable-ADSyncExportDeletionThreshold
  5. The feature should now be disabled and the deletions should resume.
  6. To re-enable this feature, run the following command:

    Enable-ADSyncExportDeletionThreshold
Note You have to specify the threshold value during this process. You can either reset the previous value or set a new value.

In AAD Sync

By default, this feature is disabled. To manage Prevent Accidental deletions, follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows PowerShell on the AAD Sync server.
  2. Run the following command:

    Import-Module DirSync
  3. To disable the feature, run the following command:

    Set-PreventAccidentalDeletes -Disable
  4. The feature should now be disabled and deletions should resume.
  5. To re-enable this feature, run the following command:

    Set-PreventAccidentalDeletes -Enable -ObjectDeletionThreshold <Integer>
