After you attach a keyboard, a mouse or another USB-based input device to your computer, your computer may no longer shut down correctly. For example, your computer may stop responding (hang) after you click Turn off or Restart.
This issue may occur when the selective suspend functionality is enabled on a device that does not support it. This situation may occur when two or more USB-based devices have the same vendor and product identification numbers, and when only one of the devices supports the selective suspend functionality.
To work around this issue, disable power management of the USB hub.
Note If you perform the following procedure, your computer will be able to shut down correctly. However, this procedure may also reduce the battery life on a portable computer.
To disable power management on the USB hub:
Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers to expand it, right-click USB Root Hub, and then click Properties.
Click the Power Management tab.
Click to clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click OK.
In Windows XP, the USB core stack supports the Selective Suspend functionality. A driver can use this functionality to turn off the USB device that it controls when the device becomes idle, even when the computer remains in a fully operational power state (S0). For example, a driver can make the following devices idle: the host controller, empty the USB hubs (including the root hub), and the full range of USB devices that are supported by the operating system. The selective suspend functionality is primarily intended to conserve battery power in portable computers. USB controllers frequently use lots of battery power, even when no devices are attached to the computer.
An example of this issue may occur with the Aspire Mouse and the MobileMouse. Both devices have the same vendor and product IDs, but onlythe Aspire Mouse can support the selective suspend functionality. When the Mobile Mouse is installed, it is reported as the Aspire Mouse, and the selective suspend functionality is then enabled. Because the Mobile Mouse does not support this functionality, it causes the computer to stop responding when the computer shuts down.
