FIX: Deadlock occurs when you acquire a SCH-M lock and alter a partition in SQL Server 2014 or 2016

Consider the following scenario:
  • You run a Transact-SQL statement that starts an update of out-of-date statistics.
  • You run another Transact-SQL statement in parallel that acquires a schema (SCH-M) lock, for example, the ALTER PARTITION SCHEME statement.
In this scenario, a three-way deadlock may occur. The deadlock is among the ALTER PARTITION SCHEME, the select statement, and the statistics being updated.

The issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server: Recommendation: Install the latest cumulative update for SQL Server
