Can't export a report as an Excel workbook when the "Interpret HTML Tags as Styles" option is selected

Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
  • On a SharePoint site or in Report Manager, you select a Reporting Services report.
  • The report contains a text box in which the HTML option of Interpret HTML Tags as Styles is selected.

When you try to export the report to an Excel workbook, the operation is unsuccessful. Additionally, the following error is logged in the Reporting Services log:
Server Error in '/Reports' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
