Symptoms

If you type a full user name in the Display Name field in the Find dialog box of your address book when you try to search a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server in Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, or Outlook 2010, you may receive one or more of the following errors:

Unable to display results because too many entries in the Internet Directory match your search criteria.

The search could not be completed. MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED.

Cannot contact the LDAP server (81) error.

Resolution

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require you to reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be resolved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

Outlook 2002

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install the latest Microsoft Office XP service pack, follow these steps:

  1. Exit Outlook 2002.

  2. Click Start, and then click Run.

  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

  4. Verify that the following key exists. If it does exist, go to step 5.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\LDAP If the key does not exist, you must create it. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Locate and then select the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook

    2. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key.

    3. Type ldap, and then press the ENTER key.

  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value

  6. Type NoDisplayNameSearch for the new value, and then press Enter.

  7. Right-click the new string value name, and then click Modify.

  8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

  9. Exit Registry Editor.

Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, and Outlook 2010

  1. Exit Outlook 2003.

  2. Click Start, and then click Run.

  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

  4. Verify that the following key exists. If it does exist, go to step 5.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\LDAP If the key does not exist, you must create it. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Locate and then select the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\xx.0\Outlook

      Where xx.0 is 11.0 for Outlook 2003, 12.0 for Outlook 2007, and 14.0 for Outlook 2010.

    2. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key.

    3. Type ldap, and then press the ENTER key.

  5. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD Value.

  6. Type NoDisplayNameSearch, and then press Enter.

  7. Right-click the new string value name, and then click Modify.

  8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

  9. Exit Registry Editor.
