SYMPTOMS
If the "Logon Failure Auditing" local policy is in use on a Windows XP-based computer that is a member of a domain, the following entry may be recorded in the Security event log if you log on to the local computer instead of to the domain:

CAUSE
This problem occurs because Winlogon.exe incorrectly tries a cached logon process for theuser who is logging on to the local computer.
RESOLUTION

Service pack information

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
