Windows XP Does Not Recognize a USB Storage Device After You Resume from Standby

A Universal Serial Bus (USB) storage device may not work when you follow these steps:

1. You plug the device into one USB port on the computer.You put the computer into standby (S3 power state).You unplug the device while the computer is in standby.You plug the device into a different USB port while the computer is still in standby.You resume from standby.
2. You put the computer into standby (S3 power state).You unplug the device while the computer is in standby.You plug the device into a different USB port while the computer is still in standby.You resume from standby.
3. You unplug the device while the computer is in standby.You plug the device into a different USB port while the computer is still in standby.You resume from standby.
4. You plug the device into a different USB port while the computer is still in standby.You resume from standby.
5. You resume from standby.

In Device Manager, an exclamation point in a yellow circle, with a status of Code 42 (duplicate device), may appear next to the device.

This problem may occur on a computer that has multiple USB controllers. Under these circumstances, the USB storage device is not recognized by Windows.

To work around this problem, unplug the USB storage device from the new USB port, and then plug it into the original port. Windows will reset and then recognize the device.

This problem has been confirmed to occur with the following USB storage devices:

• IOMega USB Zip 100 Drive
• IOMega USB Zip 250 Drive
• ScanLogic USB Flash Drive

This problem has been confirmed to occur with the following computer models:

• Toshiba ATR10-4
