OL2002: IMAP Synchronization Marks Messages As Unread After They Are Read in Offline Mode

Symptoms
If an Outlook 2002 user downloads new e-mail messages by using Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), and then the user reads the e-mail messages offline, the e-mail messages are still marked as unread after the user logs back on and synchronizes with the server.

This problem is corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3.

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Important Under certain circumstances, Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 is required before you apply the Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) client-side hotfix. Use the following information to determine if you have to install Windows Installer 2.0:
  • If you have deployed Office XP, visit the following Microsoft Web sites for more information: You may have a problem applying a hotfix that is released after Office XP SP2 if all the following conditions are true:
    • The organization is using Windows Installer 1.1.
    • The organization installed Office XP SP1 by using a client patch.
    • The organization installed Office XP SP2 by using a client patch.
  • If you installed Office XP by using a CD image, you may have a problem applying a hotfix that is released after Office XP SP2 if all the following conditions are true:
    • The organization is using Windows Installer 1.1
    • The organization installed Office XP SP1 by using a client patch.
    • The organization installed Office XP SP2 by using a client patch.
Note If you have updated your administrative installation point of Office XP with the administrative version of Office XP SP1 or Office XP SP2, you will not experience this problem. To install Windows Installer 2.0 on all computers that must have the hotfix, visit the Microsoft Download Center:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.

This hotfix only applies when a user has configured Outlook 2002 with an e-mail account on a mail server by using IMAP.
