IIS Admin Services Does Not Stay Running and Exchange SMTP Service Repeatedly Stops

You may experience both of the following symptoms on a Microsoft Exchange 2000 server that is running on Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server:
  • The IIS Admin Service stops. When you restart it, it immediately stops again.
  • The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service and the Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) service repeatedly stop and restart.
This problem may occur if the Exchange server receives a corrupted message that contains a recipient size that is not valid.

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Note You will be prompted to restart the server when you install this hotfix. If you later remove this hotfix, you must also restart the server when the removal is completed.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
