To count the number of words in a document, make sure that no text or objects are highlighted and choose Word Count from the Tools menu. To count the number of words in a section of a document, highlight the section and choose Word Count from the Tools menu.
Word Count calculates the number of words that appear in a selection or the main body text and footnotes. The Word Count utility counts words that appear in header paragraphs or footer paragraphs only once, regardless of the number of pages in the document. Standard headers and footers are not counted.
A word is defined by Works as any set of characters that are separated by a space from another word. Words separated by hyphens, periods, or any other punctuation mark are counted as one word.
