The Remote Retry Queue Length counter may not correctly report the number of messages that are in the retry queue for each link queue.
This problem may be caused by an error in the Remote Retry Queue Length counter calculation. The Remote Retry Queue Length counter calculation is based on the link status and number of messages that are in the retry queue for each link queue. An error exists in this calculation because the number of messages that are already in the retry queue are not included in the counter calculation.

When you install this fix, the Remote Retry Queue Length counter and Remote Queue Length counter have the following revised definitions:
The Remote Retry Queue Length counter indicates all messages in the retry queues and all messages in the pending retry link.
The Remote Queue Length counter indicates all messages in remote queues and those in the retry queue of each destination queue.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
The Remote Retry Queue Length counter is an SMTP System Monitor Counter that shows the number of messages that are going to other servers that could not be sent in a former attempt and that will be retried later. A high number indicates either a physical connection problem or that the remote SMTP server is unavailable.
