When you try to play a DVD-RW or a DVD+RW disk by using either Windows Media Player or Sonic CinePlayer from Sonic Solutions, you may receive the following error message:
The DVD key exchange for copy protection has failed. Playback is not possible.
This issue occurs when Copy Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM) is enabled for the DVD-RW or the DVD+RW disk, but the disk is not encrypted. The DVD component that is used to play back the DVD-RW or the DVD+RW disk tries to start an encrypted session, and it is unsuccessful because the disk is not encrypted.

To resolve this issue, Microsoft recommends that you download and install DirectX 9.0b or later on your computer. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
In those situations where your video hardware does not support DirectX 9.0, a hotfix is available to resolve this issue. Verify the file version for the existing Qdvd.dll file. If the file version is 6.4.2600.1106, you can obtain and install the supported hotfix that is described later in the "Resolution" section of this article.
To verify the version of Qdvd.dll that is installed on your computer, follow these steps:
Open the following folder:
Locate the Qdvd.dll file, right-click the file, and then click Properties.
Click the Version tab.
If the file version is 6.4.2600.1106, you can install the following hotfix.
Note This hotfix will not install on computers that have DirectX 9.0 installed. If this is the case, you must upgrade to DirectX 9.0b or later to install this hotfix. A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP that contains this hotfix.
