Group Policies Are Not Applied to Objects in an Organizational Unit Whose Name Contains an Asterisk

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
When you link a Group Policy object (GPO) to an organizational unit, the policies in that GPO are not successfully applied to users or computers in that organizational unit.
This problem occurs if the organizational unit's name contains an asterisk (*). Windows cannot query an organizational unit whose name contains an asterisk or any child organizational unit that has an upper-level organizational unit whose name contains an asterisk.

To work around this problem, move the user(s) or computer(s) to an organizational unit whose name does not contain an asterisk, and then link the GPO to that organizational unit.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4).
