When you try to expand a storage group under your server in the Exchange System Manager utility, you receive the following error message:
When you click OK, no databases appear under the storage group that you tried to expand. Additionally, the following event ID message appears in the Application log of Windows Event Viewer:
An unknown error has occurred.

This problem may occur if you moved or deleted the GatherLogs folder for Microsoft Search Service. This problem may also occur if the hard disk crashed or if you added a new hard disk drive for Microsoft Search Service.
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this problem, edit the Windows registry to point to the correct location of the GatherLogs folder. To do this, follow these steps.
Note If you deleted the GatherLogs folder, create a new GatherLogs folder and then edit the Windows registry to point to the new location.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
