OneNote is listed as a running program in Windows Task Manager although you have not run OneNote

Support for Office 2003 has ended

Microsoft ended support for Office 2003 on April 8, 2014. This change has affected your software updates and security options. Learn what this means for you and how to stay protected.

SYMPTOMS
In Windows Task Manager, the Applications tab lists one of the OneNote applications below as a running program. This behavior may occur although you have not started OneNote and OneNote does not appear to be running.

Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 - Windows taskbar

Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 - Windows taskbar

Microsoft Office OneNote 2010 - Windows taskbar

Note To start Windows Task Manager, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, and then click Task Manager.
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by the quick launch functionality of Side Note. When you start the Microsoft Windows operating system, the quick launch functionality of Side Note also starts.

If the Place OneNote icon in the taskbar option is turned on in OneNote, the quick launch functionality of Side Note runs in the background. The quick launch functionality of Side Note is listed in Windows Task Manager as Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 - Windows taskbar as Microsoft Office OneNote 2010 - Windows taskbar, or as Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 - Windows taskbar.
RESOLUTION
To turn off the quick launch functionality of Side Note, right-click the Open new side note icon in the notification area (^ icon on Windows Vista and Windows 7), and then click Remove OneNote Icon or Close. When you do this, OneNote does not run in the background. Additionally, OneNote is not listed as a running program in Windows Task Manager when OneNote is not running.

To restore the quick launch functionality of Side Note, follow these steps:
  1. To start OneNote, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, and then click the version of OneNote that you have installed on the computer.
  2. In Microsoft OneNote 2010, click Options from the File tab. In Microsoft OneNote 2003 or OneNote 2007, on the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, click Other in the Category list.
  4. In the Other section, click to select the Place OneNote icon in the notification area of the taskbar check box. In OneNote 2010, choose the Display category.
  5. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
Important The OneNote 2007 or OneNote 2010 Screen Clipper and Launcher or theMicrosoft Office OneNote 2003 Quick Launch shortcut is required for the correct operation of the quick launch functionality of Side Note. If the shortcut is missing from the Startup folder, run the "Detect and Repair" feature to complete the restoration of the quick launch functionality of Side Note. To do this, follow these steps.

For Windows XP or Windows Server 2003
  1. Click Start, click Run, type control appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click to select Office 2010 or OneNote from the application list, and then click Change.
  3. Choose Repair.

For Windows Vista or Windows 7

  1. Click to select Office 2010 or OneNote from the application list, and then click Change.
  2. Choose Repair.
