"Stackunderflow" or "typecheck" error when you print in Publisher 2003

When you try to print a Microsoft Publisher publication, you may receive an error message that resembles one of the following:

%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: mul ]%%

There could be various problem scenarios that cause this error. This article deals with one problem scenario that is explained in the "More Information" section. If you don’t understand the problem details, don’t worry. You can safely try the following procedure to see whether it fixes your problem: 
  1. Exit Publisher.
  2. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
  3. Right-click the printer, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Device Settings tab.
  5. Change the Convert Gray Graphics to PostScript Gray setting to No.
  6. Click OK.
If this procedure doesn’t fix the problem, change the Convert Gray Graphics to PostScript Gray setting back to Yes. Then, go to for further support options.

This problem typically occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You print the publication as composite cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CMYK).
  • You run a PostScript file through Adobe Acrobat Distiller, or you try to print directly to a color PostScript printer.
  • The publication contains BorderArt frames or imported Windows Enhanced Metafile (EMF) graphics that have transparent borders.
  • The printer driver is configured to convert grayscale graphics to PostScript gray.
