Windows 2000 Advanced Server May Stop Responding on Computers with More Than Eight Virtual CPUs

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
When you restart a computer that is running Windows 2000 Advanced Server, the computer may stop responding (hang). When this problem occurs, only a text cursor appears in the upper-left corner of a blank screen after you restart the computer.
This problem occurs on computers that have CPUs that support symmetric multithreading. On computers with symmetric multithreading activated, each physical CPU is presented as two CPUs (one physical CPU and one virtual CPU). The problem that this article describes may occur on computers where the total number of CPUs (including the virtual CPUs) is more than eight.
