How to install your own copy of Windows on a virtual machine in Virtual PC

This article discusses how to install your own copy of the Windows operating system on a virtual machine in Virtual PC.
To install Windows from a setup CD, follow these steps.

Note To use your own copy of the Windows operating system, it must be a Retail Licensed version. You should not use an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) version of Windows. An OEM version may have protection enabled to make sure that it can be installed only on that manufacturer's hardware. Additionally, it may not contain all the required components to install property in Virtual PC.
  1. Start Virtual PC, and then click New.
  2. Click Create a PC Manually.
  3. Click the right arrow.
  4. Click Install an operating system onto an empty PC.
  5. Click the right arrow.
  6. Select the operating system that you want to install.
  7. Click the right arrow.
  8. Set the memory size that you want to allocate for the new virtual machine.
  9. Click the right arrow.
  10. Click to select Undo Drives if you want to turn this option on.
  11. Name the new virtual machine.
  12. Click the right arrow.
  13. Click Create.
  14. Insert the Windows Setup CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  15. After the CD has been mounted, start the new virtual machine that you created.
  16. Setup automatically starts. Follow the instructions that are on the screen to install the version of Windows on the virtual machine.
  17. On the Virtual PC Toolbar, click VPC Additions, and then click Install Additions.
  18. Click Next, and then click Next.

    Virtual PC installs Virtual PC Additions on the new virtual machine.
  19. Click Finish, and then let the virtual machine restart.
